Line Check - Thermapen Bluetooth Temperature Probe

This article will review how to use the Thermapen Bluetooth Temperature Probe with the Decision Logic Manager's Toolbox 

Pairing Your Temp Test, Thermapen Bluetooth Temperature Probe 

Prepare your environment - make sure all other mobile devices in close proximity have their Bluetooth service turned off

  • The Thermapen Bluetooth Temperature Probe can only be connected to one mobile device at a time
  • If the probe is connected to another mobile device, this will prevent it from pairing/connecting to the intended Android device
  • Step 1 - Turn on your Android mobile device's Location Services which is located within the mobile device (Settings > Location > On)
  • Step 2 - Allow the Managers Toolbox app to access your device's location (see install instructions below)
    (warning) If these steps are not taken, the probe will not pair successfully.
  • Step 3 -Unfold the Probe so that the metal is fully retracted:
    • The light on the probe button should short flash upon starting to unfold, and;
    • The light should long flash upon fully unfolding
    • If it doesn't, the probe may need its battery replaced. It takes one AAA battery.

Android Device

Navigate to settings > turn on Bluetooth

  • Open Bluetooth and select the Thermapen Blue probe to pair
  • Thermapen Blue probe should pair to the device and remain paired with it
    (warning) If a user purposefully unpairs the Thermapen Blue probe from a mobile device, it can be difficult to get it to re-pair.
  • Users should not un-pair the Thermapen Blue probe from their mobile device once it is paired.

Manager's Toolbox

Install version 5.9.6 (or the latest version) on your Android mobile device > open the app > login page should appear

  • Select Configuration > in the window that opens, enter your key and save changes
  • "Success - Key validated and configuration updated" should appear, Select Okay
  • If it doesn't appear, re-enter your key and save changes until it does appear
  • Select back arrow in the upper left corner to return to the login page
  • Log in to Managers Toolbox > the homepage with location and application menu should appear
  • Select Line Check > choose a line check to start
  • Allow Managers Toolbox to access your device's location when prompted
  • Denying this will prevent Managers Toolbox from reading the Thermapen Blue probe
  • Should only be required on initial use of the probe with this device
  • A pulse flash should appear upon Managers Toolbox connecting to the Thermapen Blue probe
  • Upon becoming active, temperature line check items should display the temperature from the Thermapen Blue probe
  • Selecting the probe button should accept the current temperature as an entry for that line check item, and
  • The line check should advance to the next item in the list

Thermapen FAQ

A User is unable to connect the new Thermapen Blue probe with Managers Toolbox:

  • Confirm user has turned on Location Services within their Android mobile device
    • This can be confirmed by navigating to Settings > Location > On
  • Confirm user has allowed Managers Toolbox to access their device's location
    • This can be confirmed by navigating to Settings > Application Manager > Managers Toolbox > Permissions > Location > On
  • Confirm user has turned on Bluetooth on their mobile device
    • This can be confirmed by navigating to Settings > Bluetooth > On
  • Confirm user has paired the new Thermapen Blue probe with the mobile device
    • This can be confirmed by navigating to Settings > Bluetooth > Paired Devices
      (star)If the device is listed, it is paired


If you are still unable to connect the new Thermapen Blue probe with Managers Toolbox, follow these steps to confirm whether you can connect using the vendor's app (if this connection works, it could be an issue with Managers Toolbox):

  • HACCP LE - this is a mobile app specific to the Thermapen Blue probe and its vendor
  • Search specifically for "HACCP LE" in Google Play and install it once found
  • Open HACCP LE app > allow it to access your device's location when prompted
  • Denying this will prevent HACCP LE from reading the Thermapen Blue probe
    • RECOMMENDATION: close the probe > wait a few seconds > re-open the probe
  • The Devices tab should open with a Refresh button and no devices listed > select Refresh
  • The Thermapen Blue probe should appear below Refresh in a "Disconnected" state with a Plus Sign
  • If it doesn't appear, press the Refresh button again
  • If it still doesn't appear, repeat the Recommendation step, wait a few seconds, and then select Refresh again
  • Until the Thermapen Blue probe appears in this list, it won't work with Managers Toolbox
  • Select Plus Sign > device should pulse flash, Plus Sign turns into Green Check and show it's "Connected
  • Select the HACCP menu hash in the upper left corner > select Home > a screen opens with a circle
  • Press the Device button in the middle of screen > select Device button > select your Thermapen Blue probe
  • The screen with the circle should re-appear displaying a temperature reading from the probe inside the circle
    • IMPORTANT: this confirms the mobile device is getting temperature readings from the Thermapen Blue probe
  • Force close HACCP LE - a single flash followed by a pulse flash should appear on the probe, signaling an app disconnecting
    • NOTE: a Bluetooth device cannot be connected to more than 1 app at a time, so you must close HACCP before trying to connect to Managers Toolbox
